Oneness Needs Everyone (O.N.E.) was born out of a deep sense of compassion, community, and service. When my wife, Marti, and I moved to Durango, we immediately fell in love with the mountains and the wildlife. Concerned about the rapid development in the area, we felt compelled to preserve the natural beauty and resources we cherished. In March of 2021, we purchased a large ranch in Bayfield, CO, transforming it from a hunting property into a sanctuary where wildlife could roam freely for years to come.
As we explored the Ranch, we noticed piles of 24-foot logs from previous fire mitigation efforts. It struck us that this wood could be invaluable to families in the area who relied on it as their primary heat source. A simple post on Nextdoor generated an overwhelming response, and Oneness began its journey. With the help of Mark Anderson (affectionately known as Happy Pappy) and a group of dedicated volunteers, we managed to serve close to 40 families in our first year. In 2023, Greg Sykes, an arborist, and Jamie Boone, owner of the nonprofit Bee Whole, joined our team. Their support enabled us to serve over 60 families with approximately 90 cords of wood.
Initially, we harvested wood from downed trees and dead wood on the Ranch. Two years ago, our efforts extended to the Taylor Ranch subdivision, where we cleared down and dead trees from 10 different homesteads across 350 acres. As Oneness has evolved, we now source wood through various fire mitigation efforts in the area. One notable project about five miles from the Ranch yielded approximately 150 cords of wood, which we obtained at a significantly discounted rate. This summer, we will continue processing this wood while collaborating closely with fire mitigation companies and private landowners to secure more wood for the Ranch.
Building a Sustainable Future
Marti and I initially funded the operation out of our own pockets. However, as the word spread and the need grew, we realized the necessity of a more sustainable and effective business model. Today, we have two full-time employees, one part-time employee, and two part-time students on our team. We have also invested in a tractor, 2, 3/4 ton Trucks, 2 16 foot dump trailers, 3 Log splitters, and chainsaws and most recent purchase of 2025 is a high volume Log Processor to keep up with the growing demand.
Expanding Our Impact
To cover some of our operational costs, we accept donations and have introduced set prices for those who can afford to pay. In 2025, we've started an aggressive campaign to apply for Federal, State and Local grants. The funds generated by the various sources cover only operating expenses to create cords of wood, hauling wood off properties, delivering wood to homes, and renting some of our equipment to landowners. This new model allows us to continue our mission and expand our reach, helping even more families in need.
Serving our community is a passion shared by everyone involved with Oneness. We see ourselves as the “Robin Hood” of Durango forests, dedicated to ensuring that everyone has the resources they need to stay warm during the cold winter months.

The pay it forward program is a way to purchase wood for families that are unable to afford it. It is a great way to support the Oneness Woodshare Program and our community.
